Sally writes "i hope this is hard enough for you cause i've been figuring out this problem for days already.

i installed MS SQL 2000 server components (Enterprise Edition) in our NT 4 Server. i used SQL 6 and 7 before but i never had a chance to intall it as a server. this is my first time to setup a SQL Server. im confused with authentication mode licensing mode although i remember i chose mixed for authentication with blank password for sa and per seat licensing mode. i have no idea what could protocols should i enable in the client network utility but right now both named pipes and tcp/ip are enabled.

i have successfully created a database and some tables already. but my problem is that when i register that same sql server in my windows 2000 and windows xp workstations. i installed the client tools in these workstations. i also enabled tcp/ip and named pipes on both of the workstations. in windows xp, i succesfully registered the server but the connection is not stable. sometimes, the connection is broken and when i try to connect it say the server is not found. even when i try to restart the pc, still it cannot find the server. while in windows 2000, i cannot totally register the sql server. the error message is:

SQL Server Registration Failed because of the connection failure displayed below. Do you wish to register anyway?

General Network error. Check you network documentation
Changed language setting to us_english.
ConnectionRead (Error sio_keepalive-vals())

This problem may seem too simple for you but i spent a lot time of time looking for any answer. I hope you can spare me some of your precious time to help me.

Thanks! :)

by the ways, the server where i installed the MS SQL 2000 is also my internet server. and i can browse the internet."

It sounds like you might have a network problem. If you can register the server (At least on some machines) but the connection goes in and out, that sounds like network problems.

Not sure about the other client. Never seen that particular error.
