Hi all,
The company i work for is upgrading a core application, and I'm tasked with upgrading the associated datawarehouse. In order to minimize the latency between the production and reporting DB, we want to set up one-way transactional replication between the prod and reporting DB.

The production DB is currently 40Gb and 700 tables. We only need a subset of approx. 30 tables for the DW. We do not need to transfer the changes more than once per day, and expect peak data transfer for these 30 tables to be no more than 500Mb/day, and typically no more than 150Mb/day. All servers are in the same domain and in the same physical location, so bandwidth should not be an issue

Our centralized IT department, for reasons which are somewhat unclear to us, do not fancy the idea of transactional replication We've also been in touch with an accredited SQL Server expert, and he's suggesting that perhaps merge replication is a better choice???

OK, by now I'm a little lost, especially since MS recommends transactional replication for DW reporting scenarios. Can anyone comment on this, or at least point me in the direction of some in-depth articles on replication. I've already been through most of the beginner and intermediate stuff out there. I really need some deep dive, heavyweight articles on the finer points of replication

merge and transactional replication are two different things.. what you need (based on information you provided) is transactional replication. it works perfectly fine... you need to find out what the concerns from the IT department are.. you can also look at snapshot replication.
