a DAL (Data Access Layer) really has nothing to do with SQL Server (or any other data source for that matter).

It is an abstraction method for accessing data sources in general. This is most often implemented by creating a class which marshalls all data access throughout the application.

Here is a decent place to start: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa581778.aspx
