Confused About Best SQL Server 2005 Choice

Hello,

I am interested in doing some SQL development for personal (home) use, but I definitely need to have the capability to write stored procedures and run them. Both my desktop and laptop have the Vista OS, and for now I am quite happy with that. Also, both my desktop and laptop have the SQL Server 2005 Compact edition pre-installed.

To access the power of writing stored procedures and running them, do I need to move to Express? Is it free? If I move to Express should I uninstall Compact Edition first?

I hope someone can clear my head of the confusion.

Many thanks,

Joe

Check out this link http://www.microsoft.com/Sqlserver/2005/en/us/compact.aspx. It seems to indicate that you do need Express and it's free. Personally, I would uninstall Compact before installing Express. I've had issues reinstalling over software in the past, and now uninstall first as a matter of course.

Hi Rita,

Thank you for your reply. What you say makes sense. I kind of had a feeling that I might have to go with Express, but I couldn't convince myself. I was hoping to contact Microsoft directly by email, but somehow getting thru to them seems convoluted, and after plowing thru a couple of screens I found myself confronted by a possible charge for support.

My instinct is also along the same lines as you, since I think it's intuitively cleaner to remove a different version of the same program. I just needed someone to point me in the right direction before uninstalling Compact and possibly losing it.

Thanks again.

Joe

SQL Express and Compact are not really the diff version of same program. Compact is a totally different class for different purposes. What you need is the Express edition

There is a doc "Compare SQL Server 3.5 Compact and SQL Server Express Edition Features" here.
