| Eric writes "We are in the process of setting up a new server for a database of about 40 gigs, which has two data files and the log file, we have with 40 users. The server has 8 - 36 gig drives and 1 9-gig drive; the 8 - 36 gig drives are setup as 4 sets of mirrored pairs (raid 1). The 9-gig drive is for tempdb. The OS is on 1 pair of the mirrored drives, the other three sets of mirrors I will be putting the two data files and log file, each file on a separate mirrored pair. My question is would I be better off to stripe 2 sets of the mirrors pairs (raid 10) and put both data files on the raid 10 set?" |

| I think you are correct in putting everything on the RAID 0/1 set.I think the reccomended setup is like this4 disks Channel 0 Raid 0/1 Data Files4 Disks Channel 1 Raid 0/1 Transaction LogPut your data Files and Transaction logs on different RAID channels. That should really boost performance. With RAID 0/1 you will burn up much of your disk space, but its going to be hella fast.I highly suggest getting 1 - 2 cold spares. We have a similar configuration, and we've burnt up a few drives in the past. You have lots of disks, all of which will be pretty busy. You will wear them out, so be prepared :)Michael |
