| I am going to have to migrate a SQL 2000 server from a server running Windows Server 2000 to a server running Windows Server 2003. The old and new servers will need to co-exist until the new server has been validated, after which the new server will be renamed to have the same name as the old server. Can this be done and if so, what are the steps? Thanks, Tom |

| Absolutely, I've done it many times. Bring the new server online with a new name/IP address. Restore (or copy the mdf/ldf and attach) the databases you are bringing across onto the new server. Copy your logins, user created roles and jobs to the new server. Test all applications against the new server. When ready for go live, bring down the old server, rename the new server and change the IP to be the original server's IP. I, personally, would bring the original server back online with a new name/IP i.e. orgservername_old for verification if issues purportedly arise. By renaming the new server to the original name/IP of the old server, you don't have to modify DNSs or config files, etc. It's a relatively straight-forward process.
