Hi,I'm managing a proxy server that's built on Windows XP running MS SQL 2000. One of the transaction log files is over 240 GB and is about to max out the disk space. There is no SQL management studio installed and I have not been able to find a download for Windows XP.Is there any way to delete the transaction log without breaking the proxy server? I have no way of detaching and removing it the safe way - so I'm wondering what the harm is of stopping SQL services, deleting the file, and creating a new one with the same file name.Any thoughts on how to fix this? |

The harm is that the database may not come back up. The log file is not an optional file, it cannot simply be deleted without risk. Deleting it could result in an unusable databaseFor SQL 2000 you should be looking for Enterprise manager or Query Analyser, not management studio. Doesn't have to be installed on that machine, can be installed on any machine on the network. My guess is that the DB is in full recovery and there are no log backups.
