Susan writes "Hi
I have tried installing SQL Server 7.0 on Windows XP Professional. I have also installed the SQL7.0 Service pack 3. However I cannot find the Service Manager (at all) to start SQL Server and therefore cannot register a server. I get a connection error of SQL Server unavailable or not started. Any thoughts?
Many thanks"

You cannot install the Standard or Enterprise Editions of SQL Server on Windows XP Provessional. These need a server edition of the OS to install. It will only install the client tools (Query Analyzer, Enterprise Manager) and may not install the Service Manager. There should be an option to install the Personal Edition (I think it was called Desktop Edition in SQL 7) which gives you a local SQL Server with slight performance limitations.
