Hello,

I have a small (actually big) problem with restoring a mssql backup.
I got the files to rebuild an old website but i fail to be able to restore the .bak files and the old website owner is not available anymore.

Older backups of that website (taken 1 year earlier) are getting restored without a problem and i know for sure that the latest backup file is working as the old Administrator of the website used it for testing purpose on a different server.

The information about the backup are not many, i dont even know if the original SQL server was 2000 or 2005 but since i was able to restore the older backups i assumbed that it was version 2005.

Everytime i try to restore the backups i get error 3241 -> wrong media family
In fact the backups look different.
The one that i was able to restored contained plain text information while the newer one seems to be compressed (didnt know that this is actually possible). I also got something that looks like a hash code and was told that this one is required.
Opening the compressed database in a text editor showed that it has an uncompressed header right infront the Tape info.

Any ideas how to restore such a backup? It is really important for me to get the old website up and running again.

Maybe the backup was made by Windows Backup and not SQL Server Backup?

Which windows backup do you mean? Can it be used doing SQL backups?

This is at the top of the .bak file

Compressed backups are only possible with SQL 2008.

What's the exact error that you're getting (include complete error message please)?

The media family on device 'D:\tst\db.BAK' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family.
RESTORE HEADERONLY is terminating abnormally. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 3241)
