| Hi Everyone!I'm in the second semester of my first year at University and as I'm a 'mature' (26) student anything that could help me would be very much appreciated!I've only just started with SQL and database design but I find it very interesting. Should I try and find placements or charity work in the summer working with databases? I'm not sure if this will be possible or not, but a lot of graduates struggle with the amount of experience they have. Failing that I guess I'll go all out for a first class degree! |

| Getting real-life experience as early as possible will make it *a lot* easier for you to get a decent job when you're finished with your degree. Getting a relevant paid job as a freshman might be difficult (but not at all impossible!) but if you're willing to work for free to get experience it's a different story. Ask around! If it's hard to get a job, you can also create your own and it is in fact a lot more fun. Find someone in your class or something and start a data driven web site. Create a social network of some kind or a fantasy football league or something. It doesn't have to be ground breaking technology or anything new and fancy but start a cool project that you believe in and that would be fun and that might have some business potential.- LumbagoMy blog-> http://thefirstsql.com/2011/02/07/regular-expressions-advanced-string-matching-and-new-split-function-sql-server-2008-r2/ |
