what is the difference in char,varchar and varchar2??is there any limitation or restriction in using these data types....i'hve read that varchar is fixed width string datatype and varchar2 is a variable width string datatype...so what does it actually means.....if size of varchar is fixed then what is the size defined for it??

Generally speaking, char is fixed length, and varchar (varying character) varies in length, up to the length specified in parentheses. I don't know about varchar2, it's an Oracle data type, and SQLTeam is a Microsoft SQL Server website. There's an Oracle forum over at http://dbforums.com/
