Hi,

Do we need sql server 2005 standard edition product key while installing new instance. Right now we have two node cluster, sql server 2005 standard edition already installed. We will build two standalone servers, reinstall sql sever 2005 standard edition as standalone, move databases and other objects from netbackup.

I recently install sql server 2005 standard edition as named instance on one of our computer and used software purchased by our company. During installation it takes product key automatically and I did not enter. So I just want to know do we need product key for this new installation.

Thanks

It just reused the one for the previous installation. The keys do not need to be unique. You just need to keep track of your licenses.

Thanks tara for reply.
We are not taking care of licenses. I think another department (probably marketing) take care.
My question is: When we install sql server 2005 on new bux, do I ask the DR team to provide us sql server 2005 product key? They will place/copy cds in new server and we will install remotely from that location.

What you do in your organization is up to you. I just use the same license key over and over again. We keep track of our licenses separately from the product keys.

Tara may be I am mixing up things.
When we start setup to install sql server 2005 standard edition, there is one screen, where we can select evaluation edition or product key. I am talking about that one. When I install sql server 2005 standard edition one one of server that already had sql server 2000 enterprise edition (side by side), product key was selected automatically. I just want to know on new bux do we need product key or it will be embeded in cd?

It's embedded in the media that we use, but we get ours from MSDN license. Last time I used a CD was years ago, and a product key was required.
