I've done many SQL server installs for multiple different versions but this has me stumped. We're on Windows Server 2008 Enterprise and installing SQL Server 2005 Std on it.

I have the local volume partitioned to a C and E drive. I have twice now done the install (after uninstalling) and each time it installs everything on the C drive when I clearly have set it to the E drive under the Advanced options before starting the install.

Has anyone else experienced this? Very odd. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, first of all - I would not recommend installing the binaries on the E:\ drive. I would recommend using the default location for the binaries, especially since there are components of the installation that will install on the C:\ drive no matter what you do.

Second, where are you actually changing the drive under Advanced? There are several levels...

When I setup SQL Server, I install binaries on the C:\ drive and change the data files location to my SAN or Data drive. This is done on the Advanced page, open up the database section and select data files. I change the location here - just specifying the drive letter. After the installation is complete, I then have on the SAN or data drive the following: E:\MSSQL.n\MSSQL\...

Theck the comment "Install SQL 2008 x64 to different volume than C:\" on this msdn article, it's for SQL 2008 R2 but I assume it works the same way for 2005 as well:
