Hi All,

Can any body tell me regarding INdex in SQL server 2005 management studio.

I want archive some Data from table.
Then I need to drop the index,delete the data and recreate the index.
Is this correct,,..??
If so can you let me know the process please..!!!

Find out the name of the sql server - and obtain the logon credentials. You can now log on , and complete the tasks - 1)archive data 2)index management 3)index rebuild

SQL Server management studio is a client tool used to connect to database

Hi Thanks for reply..!!
I have the Credentials.!!
All i wanted to know is it necessary to drop a index before deleting some data from table..??
If so why?
What is the importance of Dropping and recreating the index..??

I'm not really the index guru here... but I'll take a stab.

Two things:
- If you are deleting alot of records, the overhead of trying to maintain the index while the delete is processed can slow the process
- Also, if you are deleting alot of records, the likely hood of an index becoming VERY fragmented is relatively high, so the index would need to be defrag'd or rebuilt to make it efficient and useful again
