| Hi Everyone,I am very much interested in database.I am a dot net developer.I had written some stored procedures and designed some tables and also written some simple T-SQL Quereis.I want to setup the database server at home to excel in database. So I just want to know what are the specifications needed to setup the server like memory, speed of the processor etc.And I also need some suggestions where to start.Any links to follow would also be good. Please give me some suggestions.I don't know whether this would be the good place to ask or not. Thanks IN ADVANCESravanthi |

| If your interests are in being a SQL developer (as opposed to being a DBA), I would start with the express Edition. http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2008/en/us/editions.aspx That will let you get your feet wet. From a developer's perspective, you can do most of the things that you would need to improve your skills just with the Express edition. As for hardware, I don't think you would need to buy any high-powered servers. Start with your plain old PC and see how it goes.I used to be a .Net developer too (and I still claim I am one if there are no other .Net developers within earshot) but somehow, my heart was always in databases. Like anything else, as I am trying to learn, each day I find that there is more I don't know. But that is the fun part of it if you enjoy it. English is not my native language, so I may not be expressing myself clearly, but what I am trying to say is that, go for it if you enjoy it, you will have a lot of fun learning and experimenting and even making mistakes. |
