Hi,I am applying for a job that requires familiarity with large databases and SQL database queries. Since I have never used SQL, I would like to learn how to use it. I am trying to set it up on my computer at home and I just can't figure out how to do it. It's getting quite frustrating -- I've spent a lot of time online trying to figure it out and nothing is working. Could someone just please tell me what *exact* things I need to do to get it up and running? I only need the most basic functionality, since I simply want to practice making a few queries, etc.I have Mac OS X. I also have Microsoft Query (and Excel) already installed. I've downloaded and "installed" MySQL in the system preferences but nothing happens when I click "start MySQL server." I haven't quite figured out what an "ODBC driver" is and whether I need to download one additionally. My apologies if this is a dumb question or it's already been answered. I'd really appreciate some help! Thanks.

SQLTeam is a Microsoft SQL Server website. There's a MySQL forum over at http://dbforums.com/ that could help you.

djschoo i have the EXACT same situation. I just posted last night asking for the same advice. I tried MySql as a book i have suggested but it does not seem to do anything once installed. I was suggested a link to microsoft that I am going to try tonight after work. Sorry I dont have information on how to do so, but wanted to sub your thread too in case more posts are added(plus to bump it). If you do find success getting started please let me know(I am also frustrated!).

Um, at the risk of repeating myself...SQLTeam is a Microsoft SQL Server websiteTo be more clear, we DO NOT answer questions about Sybase, MySQL, Oracle, PostGres, DB2, VoltDB, Cassandra, other NoSQL products, etc. etc. As I suggested earlier, please check the MySQL forum at http://dbforums.com/ or, here's a thought, the MySQL web site.
