Dear All,

We have a problem with a grid showing data in our software. using VB.net and SQL 2005/2008 server. The problem is that once we do a db.fill the application waits for a complete dataset to arrive at a client before it displays it. The application hangs too. In order not to hang we will implement background thread and I hope it will be fine.
As for the data retrieval we would like to accomplish something similar like SQL SMS studio, i.e. it starts to show data while in the background it lists additional rows as they are retrieved.
Is there any trick to do this or we have conceptual problem meaning the way the data arrives at the client?

I think for you professionals I managed to explain the problem clear, I'll post any additional info if needed.

Have you considered implementing server side paging?

Hello TG,

Server side paging requires pageable datagrid or no?
Is this a feature ment for web applications or it can be implemented in the client server software as well.

For client server paging refer below link which fetch only data of current page rather then fetch all n rows of table:

paging can be controlled completely at the database server. There are several articles and many thread topics posted on this site on the subject. Many methods are discussed and examples posted including ways for server versions prior to 2005.
