how do i copy a database from sql server to a file(s) so i can have my own backups etc

1. Make a Full Backup file, and RESTORE that on the second machine
2. DETACH the database, copy the database files to the second machine, reattach the database on both the Primary and Secondary machines

I always do (1) because:

If re-attach doesn't work you don't have a database so I would take a backup first anyway - in which case just copy the Backup file and restore that

You have to take the main database offline to DETACH it, and then it stays offline for however long it takes to copy.
