Hello guys,

My name is Lanti, and I am new to SQL Server, both Programming and Administration.
I need to connect to a local db that is hosted in a PC on our network, but in my PC I have installed just the SQL Server tool.
Can you please help me on this issue?

I am running on Windows 7 using SQL Server 2008 R2.
Same regarding the other PC hostind the local DB.

Thank you all and regards,
Lanti

you can use IP address of remote machine or its machine name as server name after connecting to SQL Server management studio in your machine and opening new connection window. I hope sql server db is installed as default instance in other machine, if not, you need to use machinename\instancename

Thank you for your answer,

I know how to connect to a remote server
that hosts the db. The problem stands with connecting to
a stand-alone PC on the network, in which a local db has been created

Yes, I have tried connecting using the machine name (even the IP address),
but I am getting the same error
quote:
TITLE: Connect to Server
------------------------------

Cannot connect to billk5136.

------------------------------
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 5)

But I have not tried connecting machine_name\instance_name ...

What can I do to find out the instance in the local PC?

Follow the following steps:

1. Open the Sql server management studio
2. Right click on your server name
3. Click Connect
4. Select Database engine for server type
5. select/type the server name (either name of the machine or ip address). If it is not installed on default instance, write servername\instantname
6. Enter appropraite authentication username and password and click connect.

Enjoy SQL.....

No matter, we will solve it!

Yes,

I checked the services.
They are up and running! (Also, I can ping the remote machine)

I even created a new login, on the remote PC, but I still can not connect to the db. Is there anything from PC side that I should check?

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible.
