Hey guys,

I am currently employed as a data analyst, and found a great job opportunity. However, the listing does have one requirement that makes me uneasy:

Experience with SSIS, SSAS, and SSRS

Well in short, I have zero experience with these components. I do have a lot of exporting exporting data out of SQL into Access, Excel, Crystal Reports and other reporting software like Tableau.

From what I gather, the concepts are basically the same in the SQL tools. My question is given my background, would I be able to self-teach myself these components, or am I way out of my league here? I've wrote hundreds of queries, know how to manipulate and export data. Unfortunately, I don't have direct access to the SQL server to access these SQL tools.

Go for it, but be honest with them about your experience, or lack thereof. If you've been using Crystal and Tableau you can pick up SSRS pretty quickly. SSIS is also easy to learn. SSAS is the only one I've been challenged to learn, as my head doesn't wrap around dimensional modeling. If you can do that kind of thinking then it should be easy for you to learn SSAS as well.

You most definitely can teach yourself and pick it up real quick, as long as you are dedicated for some lab work

this is what I did
1. got a book on ssis and ssrs from BArnes and Nobles
2. Installed sql server on my home network on vmware ESX
3. Went through the books every single day for a couple of weeks
4. You can even download sample data from microsoft

Then when interview came I was honest like rob says but at least I was familiar with what they were going to ask me.
That was 4 years ago.
