Have couple of questions:

1. Can I connect from "SQL 2008 Developer edition" to SQL 2008 (on the remote server) to export and manage databases on SQL 2008.

2. Can I also connect to SQL 2000 (on a remote server) from 2008 Developer edition.

3. Is there a free download for 2008 Developer edition or do I buy it?

Thanks.

1. Yes
2. Yes.
3. Developer Edition is $49 and you can purchase it directly from Microsoft. However, make sure to never use it for production purposes, that would violate the license terms, and if you get caught will cost you a lot more than production software would.

Yes. And as long as you have the proper drivers, you can import from non-SQL Server data sources (Excel, Access, text files, Oracle, MySQL, etc.)

Rob: do you know if dev version of SQL 2012 is out yet? I haven't been able to find anywhere to buy/download it...

Found it on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/SQL-Server-Developer-Edition-2012/dp/B007RFXQAM

Kinda weird it's not on Microsoft's site.

Yeah, I found that too but it's a CD/DVD, I'd prefer a download of some sort. I do have a colleague that has access to MSDN though. Maybe I'll ask him to...hm...check it out for me.

Yeah, use MSDN if you have it, that's what it's there for.
