I do not yet have a MS SQL Server product but I do know other SQL syntax/commands etc. What I would like to know is which MS SQL product should I purchase or download free to start with. I have a very large language DBMS application in mind. I would like to start with a feasabily phase of say some 2K/3K records using, if possible, MS Express or Compact. Does anyone out there know the differences and or restrictions with these products?. Would I be better off purchaing the Standard version at the outset? Any advice from experienced MS SQL Server programmers would be good. Thanks.

You can view the differences on Microsoft's web site. All editions and their differences are very clearly documented on there.

I'd recommend starting with Express edition. If you need more, then you can purchase Developer edition until you are ready for Standard or Enterprise. I wouldn't recommend purchasing Standard until you know what you need.

Tks Tara for your speedy reply. Much appreciated. The MS site has too much info. for a new comer like me. It's hard to find exact pricing info too for SQL server products. A forum like this and people like you are a great help to newbees. JW
