Michael writes "Hi,

I have a problem when trying to upgrade my SQL 7 standard edition to SQL 2000 standard edition.

I never get a chance to select the "Upgrade, remove, or add components to an existing installation of SQL Server" option as it is grayed out. I would like to do an upgrade to SQL 2000 as I want to upgrade over the previous version. I can't see what is causing the installation to fail finding SQL 7 installed.

I have even setup a 2nd test machine with Windows 2000 Server (SP2) and installed a new copy of SQL 7 and tried the same upgrade but I am stuck due to the option being grayed out again.

I would like any ideas on how to get around this. The only thing I can tell you is that the copy of SQL 2000 is a 120 day Evaluation CD. I assume this shouldn't be the issue as I was aware it was a full working copy of the product.

thanks

Michael"

I have a feeling that the evaluation version won't allow you to upgrade an existing 7.0 server.

You should read the following articles on SQL Team, they detail how to move up to SQL 2000:

http://www.sqlteam.com/item.asp?ItemID=9066
http://www.sqlteam.com/item.asp?ItemID=9465
http://www.sqlteam.com/item.asp?ItemID=10061

There are methods described to do a fresh install of 2000 and re-attach or restore the databases from the 7.0 server.
