We installed SQL 2012 recently... linked server between SQL 2012 and SQL 2008 using SQLNCLI11 is working fine; however, we have issues creating linked server between SQL 2000 and SQL 2012. We did these below:
1. We installed the DLL for SQLNCLI10
2. Our SQL 2000 has SP4 so we Executed the script instcat.sql again in query analyzer we got few warnings but the scripts executed with no error
3. We created the Linked Server between SQL 2000 and SQL 2012 in SQL 2012 and we can view the catalogs; however, when we query the catalog we get the ERROR below:

Msg 8522, Level 16, State 3, Line 1
Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MS DTC) has stopped this transaction.

I am not sure why I am getting this error when the linked server with SQL 2008 is doing fine and there is not MS DTC error also linked server using the same SQL 2000 server with SQL 2008 server is working fine as well so I don't think there is issue with configuring MSDTC. Anyone with experience, please suggest what we should look for? Sould we reinstall the SQL 2012 again? Should we install SQL 2008 and then upgrade to SQL 2012? Thanks a lot for your help.

I found an informative post about this error on microsoft blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/distributedservices/archive/2009/02/07/the-hidden-tool-msdtc-transaction-tracing.aspx

If you got this error message, They recommended to use MSDTC transaction tracing tool to figure out more details about your transaction. Hope the article will help you to find out the solution of the error!!
