Hi Team, today i faced an interview, and in that, i faced a question that how will you take a full backup on primary database where logshipping is configured.I Answered and argued that for full bakup no need to use copy_only option. for logbackups it is needed. the interviewer is not happy with the answer. could you please clarify on this please....Thanks in advanceArnavEven you learn 1%, Learn it with 100% confidence. |

Could you explain a little better as there is no problem with taking a full backup with log shipping running. |

Hi sunsanvin(Arnav)Full backup could not break log chain, so you can perform full backup anytime without disrupting transaction log shipping. While transaction log backup, it breaks log chain and truncate transaction log. That it's mean transaction log backup could disrupting transaction log shipping. In the case you really need to do transaction log backup during transaction log shipping machine, just specify "COPY_ONLY" while backing transaction log.For your answer, it appears to be the right answer. Don't worry, I just perform full backup on my log shipping machine in the last 10 minutes ago. It has been working properly. Please confident in your answer.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -KomkritCurrently be a DBA in worldwide hotel reservation.Experienced in top leading banking environment. |

Well you don't need to use copy_only for log backups either. It only breaks the chain if you don't apply them to the secondary server. Log shipping is using tlog backups on the primary to keep the secondary in sync. What the interviewer not happy about your answer regarding full backups or tlog backups? Maybe the interviewer doesn't understand backups...Tara KizerMicrosoft MVP for Windows Server System - SQL Serverhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/Subscribe to my blog |
