I am brand new to SQL servers and purchased 'Joes to Pros' and SQL Server Developer Edition to start learning. I'm wondering if there is a good free hosting service to run SQL server on. Would an Amazon EC2 micro instance be adequate? If not, is there anything else out there?

What about the Express Edition? It's free and you can install as many instances as you like.

If my experience of using the Express Edition is anything to go by, once you try anything more complicated than SELECT * FROM then you start running into "ah you can't do that" issues.

We are using Amazon EC2 micro and have installed SQL Server Express Edition. For Standard Edition, every they charge quite less.--------------------------http://connectsql.blogspot.com/
