hi all, first of all i'm sorry if i'm posting this in the wrong section. i have looked for a correct section for this sort of questions but wasn't able to find one.my name is mark and i'm a sys admin at a trading software company. in my day to day duties i do not use sql. the main focus is to maintain the software our developers develop.my desire is to transition into the DB Admin field. i'm very new to SQL but have a very strong desire to get a job in about 2 years as an admin.i have started learning SQL but there is always one question that i ask myself - what should i focus on if i want to become an admin. I'm really not someone who likes programming, scripting (VB, powershell etc) but really like to work with data and DBs.would one of you mind giving me some tips on what you would focus on and if any certifications would be helpful. also - what are companies actually looking when hiring (entry level) DB admins. by no means am i posting this so someone can do the research for myself. i'm constantly reading blogs and trying to figure out how to approach my goals. i just would like to hear your opinions and thoughts.really appreciate your help! |

Dear friend, I read your query, I have the same desire but i am just a step ahead from you. Actualy i am working as techincal support engineer (I.T Hardwares and softwares, ATM, Banking). Let me tell you my story in brief, i was having same desire as yours but i decide to take start and i arranged SQL server 2012 and get started from internet searching steps and guides at last i found a very usefull book in PDF formate in free. 2nd step, I got chance in my office to interact with the SQL Server 2012 Evluation edition, So now i am able to do basic administration and handling the same resps as DBA, Further i do not know about the certifications or institutions except Microsoft. If you need the book i will forward it to you or you can get it free from the internet by typing "SQL Server 2012 Administration guide" in google. Or buy the book Mastering SQL Server you will be the master in SQL Server. It was my humble adviceRaj Malook |

First step - download SQL Server Express and start to learn t-sql. Read everything you can on the subject and get as much hands on experience as possible. SQL Server Bookks Online (BOL) is a resource which is improving with every version. It has a tremendous amount of detail. http://www.sqlserver-dba.com/2011/05/top_10_dba_tips.htmlJack Vamvas--------------------http://www.sqlserver-dba.com |
