Can a Linked Server cause performance issues

Hi SQL Team.

On a development server I temporarily created a linked server to another machine on our network for testing purposes. I left it there using the option of pass-through authentication and forgot about it. Our ETL guy told me that it causes performance issues on the server but I know that I do not use it and the link itself would not be a usable link to anyone who would possibly have access to the server.

My question therefore is, can the linked server have a negative impact on the server if it is not being used, that is, it just "exists".

My guess is not but I need some confirmation on this.

Thanks, Nick.

that I am aware of. It can definitely impact the performance of queries that use the Linked Server, but that is not what you are describing. Just having a Linked Server that exists, but not used should have no negative impact that I can think of.

I agree. Your ETL guy is wrong.

Thanks guys, I was shocked that someone in IT would say something like that - it makes no sense at all if the linked server is not being used. Granted, if I'm not using it I should clean up after myself as etiquette, but to say that just having a linked server is taking up resources is proposterous. Thanks for clarifying that for me. :)
