Hi,
I have used SSMS 2000 about as a Programmer Analyst. After career gap of 5 years, in my new job I am currenly using SSMS 2008. I would like to advance my skills in SQL progamming quicker & want to know what is the best way to do that at my own in addition to 'learning by doing' at work.
I think I should start studying for 'Developing Databases by Using Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (Exam 70-433)'
What are the best and last expansive resources for this?
Thank you!

Niki

Start with Microsoft self paced training kit. Get as much hands on experience as you can. Read blogs, follow forums like these. That should put you on track for this.

Studying for the certifications is one way. An alternate approach would be to pick a few books, not necessarily oriented towards certification, and study them.

I have two favorite authors, so my list is completely biased, but here they are:

Itzik Ben-Gan
1. Microsoft SQL Server 2012 T-SQL Fundamentals
2. Inside Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008: T-SQL Programming
3. Inside Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008: T-SQL Querying

Other "Inside SQL Server" series of books by MS Press are good as well.

Robert Vieira:
1. Professional Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Programming

I like Vieira's books for the nice way in which he explains things that makes you want to read them. Ben-Gan is in a class by himself.

you can get it online like amazon or pick a copy at local book store

B/w you might want to consider taking certification on SQL 2008 R2 or 2012 as 70-433 is supposed to expire sometime in early 2013

I began with 'Inside Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008: T-SQL Programming'. Chapter 1 was good & I followed it fine. Chapter 2 is User-defined Functions, which requires to create a class in VS2008. Is there any C#/VB code available (other than in A-2 listing which is hard copy of the code in this book) to create these classes or am I expected to know how to code in C# or VB before I go any further?

I would recommend skipping the CLR portion for now and coming back to it in a second pass if you choose to. CLR, while very useful, efficient, and ideally suited for some tasks, is more of an advanced topic that you may (or may not) want to get into after you have the basics down.
