Hi Anyone have any instructions on moving the sql 2005 databases to a new sql2012 physical server with a new name.

I have not done that myself. But, I'm pretty sure that you can just do a backup and restore.

We used backup/restore with full, diff and log backups. You can also use mirroring or log shipping.

Since the physical server will be a new name doesn'r code have to be changed to point to the server, like the apps, also we have to create all the users?

Yes connection strings will have to change unless you are using a DNS alias. But that's not something a DBA handles.

Yes you'll need to create any logins, jobs, etc. Anything outside of the user database will need to be scripted.

Running Upgrade Advisor is useful , it may highlight some obvious issues

Thanks where do I get upgrade advisor and how to run. I going to move the sql 2005 databases to sql 2012. Do I run the advisor on the sql 2005 box?

The upgrade advisor comes with SQL Server 2012 feature pack. Point it at the target sql server instance and it will create a report for you. Look for SQLUA.MSI and choose the relevant architecture
