If I have two instances of SQL Server 2008 R2, and I want to install a third, do I need to stop the services of the other two Server instances before installing the new instance? |

No, but they will likely need to be restarted as part of the installation due to shared files.Tara KizerSQL Server MVP since 2007http://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/ |

Do I still need a restart even if they're the same version? |

You won't need to restart the others. Each instance has its own binn directory with its own executables. |
