Mohammad writes "Hi!

I am looking desperately for help. I have dell 4400 (dual process) server with Windows NT 4.0 and SQL Server 2000 on it. I have raid 5 on it.

I had SQL Server 7 previous to that and upgrading to 2000 screwed the installation so I decided to redo the installation. I created 3 partitions

1. 4GB Strip where Windows NT 4 and SQL Server 2000 are installed
2. 130GB RAID 5 (32k per cluster)
3. 68GB Volume (For transaction logs)

everything works but all of a sudden the nt server hangs and so I have to turn off and on again. This happens repeatedly ever 8 to 20 hours. I was going to defrag but due to 32k per cluster Diskeeper could not do it.

Last week, my server hung and after restarting, it worked smoothly for next 5 days. As soon as (after 5 days), I tried to login to Windows NT, system hung again.

This forces me to think that it's not SQL but it's Windows NT installatino itself. which has sp6 also on it. About my databases, I have 10 databases with 3 currently very active with about 1000 inserts/min and 500 updates on 3 databases.

I don't see any issue with any of the databases as server hangs on radom occasions

Please Help!

Thanks in advance"

Have you verified that your system complies with the HCL specs? Have you checked SQL Server's logs and NT's logs for clues?

Do you have the option of upgrading to Windows 2000? I have also had issues with NT4 and SQL2K. All problems solved when going to Windows 2000 though.
