Shbon writes "Using sp_who2, I noticed a process which should have completed. The process was a back-up process which should have run a few days ago (set-up to back up system DBs through a maintainance plan). However, the DBname in the sp_who2 output for this process was NULL. So, it looks like a rogue backup processes which had no database associated with it.

This has the effect of blocking other back-ups.

Can you please help in explaining why I am getting such a rogue process? Is it a service pack issue?

Currently on Windows NT, running SQL Server 2000 with no service pack.

Many Thanks,
Shbon.

ps. please let me know if you need more information."

First things first, regardless of whether it is a SP issue or not, you should always be on the latest service pack unless you know there is problem with upgrading to the latest service pack. Do that and see if it helps.
