Hi!I have a nightly backup running daily at 9 PM. The job deletes old backup file and creates a new one every night. From last 4 weeks, weirdly, when friday night's backup occurs, it doesn't delete thursday's old file which leads to space issues over the weekend and on Monday morning I find the db backups have failed due to lack of space.I don't have any jobs on Thursday. The only other thing that happens is that every night around 10 PM, our Server guys copy the backup to a tape. But I cannot understand how any of this can affect the friday night's backup. Thanks,Sarat

When you use the maintenance plan wizard to create a backup, the deletion of the old file doesn't occur until after the full backup has completed. So you need sufficient disk space for two backups files instead of one. If you would like the deletion to occur prior to the full backup starting, then you will need to create a special backup job instead of using the maintenance plan wizard.

I agree with you but my issue is that after friday night backup occurs, it doesn't delete thursday's backup and then saturday's fails. if there is a space issue, backup should have failed on friday itself.ex: i have 53 gb space now. i do a backup which is 20 gb file (now i am left with 33 gb). then tomorrow i do another backup of 20 gb (now left with 13 gb) then after backup i delete the 1st backup -> this is what is not happening! but ironically it happens for all days except on friday. i hope i didn't confuse you.sarat.

So are you using the maintenance plan wizard or did you create a job to do this? If you created a job, post the code here and we'll let you know what we think could be the problem.

i am using maintenance plan wizard. here are specifics:1. Backup db as a part of maintenance plan (no log backups or optimizations in this plan).2. Occurs Daily every 1 day.3. Frequency: Occurs once at 9 PM4. Remove files older than 1 day. => why will this be a problem only on fridays? thanks, sarat.

Maybe when the job executes on Fridays that the Thursday job isn't older than 24 hours. Maybe it's only 23 hours old and therefore does not get deleted.
