New server on the way and I need another copy of SQL 2000. Does anyone know a retail website that discounts SQL 2000 server?

www.pricegrabber.com is a great web site that compares prices from many other e-commerse web sites. Depending on which license you are looking for, it looks like you can find SQL server 2000 for somewhere between 33% and 50% off of list price.

Thanks Peter,

After looking at the link you provided I'm not sure which 'standard editions' of SQL 2000 I would need.

I'm not sure I belive the CDW price of $695 for a Standard Edition???

Is it for real?

He, He! And why not? VS.Net retails at $650+ for the standard edition too. Anything above standard (Architect, Enterprise) is $900+.

It's not that $695 is a lot, but that the list price of SQL 2000 Standard Edition is so much higher.

After looking back at it, I can see how this one is a little more complicated than most. I usually go to the Manufacturer to compare part/model numbers. Microsoft starts the difficulty by making these hard to find (I still haven't found them on their site). To use a DB metaphore, now we get to mine data from a table without a primary key. This will take some work and not everybody out there is honest. As you know, saving money always takes time. Assuming it is worth it, you can start to drill down to sample companies to see how they describe the product.

Here are more pages to look at on the Microsoft site to figure out what is available so you know exactly which license you want:

The link you showed is for the processor license method
The price you mentioned is for the CDW 5 seat Client Access License method. They also require you to be a Microsoft Select customer to purchase it. You see this if you fully go to their web site. Another site doesn't advertize that they have this requirement, but they charge more. If you want the processor license method, zero click the following links that were on that page:
SQL Server 2000 Standard 1 PROC NT/W2K ... $2980

SQL Server 2000 Enterprise 1 PROC NT/W2K ... @3800
http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=321871/prsrt=1/ut=cc82ac0ce8c83fd5

I always sort by price then look down the list at the merchants' review stars and quantity until if find one that I am reasonably satisfied with the review rating of. In this case, It looks like E-Bargain Software might be my pick.
Their Standard Edition for 1 processor is $3,099 currently (list is $4,999)
-You save $1,900
Their Enterprise Edition for 1 processor is $6,299 currently (list is $19,999)
-You save $13,700

Happy shopping

Peter
