I wonder if sp3a fixes any of the problems that sp3 has. We've contacted our MS rep about this, and I'll let you know what she says once we find out. Here's the info:http://www.microsoft.com/sql/downloads/2000/sp3.aspTara

I would like to think that it does, but I find this quote strange if that is the case:quote: If you have applied SP3, you do not need to apply SP3a. SP3a is only for SQL Server users who have not applied any versions of SP3. However, you should use SP3a rather than SP3 moving forward.

Yeah I foudn that strange too. That's why I am going to wait to hear from our MS rep. Hopefully the news is good. If not, then we'll just stick with sp2 + cumulative security patches.Tara

From the above mentioned link:quote: SQL Server 2000 SP3a:Improves serviceability for SQL Server 2000 Evaluation Edition. SP3a enables service pack upgrades for trial software. In the past, service packs have not been applicable to trial software. Includes a new version of Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) version 2.71a. This version fixes the installation of MDAC files and a memory leak. These issues are addressed in articles 814572 and 814410 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. Disables listening on port 1434 when networking is disabled. This provides further protection from "denial of service" attacks. This service pack includes the following files:...BenefitsIn addition to providing the latest updates and fixes, SQL Server 2000 SP3a includes the following benefits: Serviceability improvements include: Enhanced error reporting. SQL Server can be configured to have critical errors automatically sent to Microsoft. Improved multiserver administration. New diagnostic Transact-SQL function. Database administrators or third-party tools can use the new fn_get_sql function to help diagnose problem processes. PerformanceSP3a introduces support for QLogic’s VI-enabled SANblade QLA2350 Fibre Channel controller. The use of Virtual Interface technology in the SQL Server networking layer reduces CPU consumption per message on the server and client systems and improves performance. SecurityThe latest security features and tools include: Updates to SQL Server 2000 Books Online. SQL Server 2000 Books Online provides customers with guidance on how to make their environment more secure. Security patches. SP3a includes patches for known vulnerabilities reported by users or discovered through ongoing testing. SQL Server Agent enhancements. SP3a gives you the ability to run SQL Server Agent without having to be an administrator.

I heard some time ago that they were sp3 was to be re-released (can't remember where) - I guess 3a is it.sp3 came not too long after the worm hot fix. But I'm sure that was just a cooincidence and it was ready to release. As with all these things let other people rush into testing it before risking a production system.==========================================Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.DTS can be used in a similar way.Beer is not cold and it isn't fizzy.

Well it was probably me that you heard it from. I mentioned it because that's what our MS rep had told us. We are trying to confirm if sp3a is the re-release of sp3 but without the problems. I'll let you know.Tara |

I haven't heard anything from our MS rep yet.I'd wait on sp3a for a couple of months especially considering how important your database is (from your other post). There probably aren't too many servers out there that have sp3a running in production yet.Tara

Apart from set up fixes and a change for MSDE in terms of command line switches for the install, the most important bit is the fix for a memory leak in the ODBC driver quote: Fixes specific to SP3a:814572 FIX: SQL Server Does Not Start and an Access Violation Occurs After You Install SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3 814410 FIX - Performance Degradation and Memory Leak in the SQL Server ODBC Driver 814130 INF: How to Secure Network Connectivity for SQL Server 2000 Local Databases
