John writes "Is there a way in which a user can be granted database access but prevented from accessing the database through Enterprise Manager?

Thanks,

Don't install Enterprise Manager on the user's computer.

OK, I understand the desire to not let people use Enterprise Manager. Heck, I even blogged on the topic (http://weblogs.sqlteam.com/markc/posts/343.aspx). But what is your real concern? If you have setup your security (logins & permissions) properly, there should be no concern if they use Enterprise Manager because they are still restricted in what they can accomplish. Enterprise Manager does not automatically give you sysadmin privileges. It is still based on the login.
