Tempdb is certainly needed. Do not do anything with it. Are you the DBA? If so, then you should know not to mess with system databases. If you are not, then you should have the DBA perform the maintenance.

What kind of maintenance work needs to be performed?

I read up on it from microsoft and I realise that it shouldn't be touched. My real question was how to optimise it. But I am doing some reading on it. Thanks for the help.
My Maintenace is the cleaning up of unwanted databases, like nothrwind and pubs. Thanks for the information. Oh, I am totally new to the DBA world so pardon my ignorance.

It could also be read as

"Is tempdb part of the maint process"

But if I had to put a bet down...I'm going with Tara...

Always bet on deadlines being met..sure bet...

I mean betting against them...

EDIT: I wouldn't lose Northwind and Pubs....They're so small anyway...

Tempdb does not need to be part of any maintenance routine.

Why bother deleting northwind or pubs? It's a good place to store trace tables if you don't already have a location for these. I do not store my trace tables in the user database because it is not part of the application.
