Can you load query analyser and connect using that?

Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.
DTS can be used in a similar way.

I don't want to put anybody down, but how are you expected to perform an upgrade on a SQL database with the "very little SQL background" that you have? I have a feeling, this is only the beginning of your troubles...hire a consultant who knows what (s)he is doing

Oops - given that your system is only secure to the last restorable backup you could be in trouble.
