Hi Everyone - I'm almost positive that this is a rare occurence, but I figured I'd ask anyway.I am going to be uninstalling SQL server 7.0 on an NT4 server and then installing SQL server 6.5. Then the server is going to be upgraded to windows 2000 server. Of course I couldn't find any info about this on the web - except to be sure that service pack 5a for 6.5 is installed before the server is upgraded.Am I going to run into any problems here? Thanks in advance,Kim

It is highly not recommended to upgrade a server from NT4 to Win2k. It is recommended that you completely rebuild the server from scratch. And yes sp5a needs to be installed for SQL6.5 to work on Win2k.Tara

Thank you Tara - I appreciate the response.I am not the one actually upgrading the server, so I will pass this info along to the person who is. Is this due to the fact that SQL Server is on it, or other reasons?

Why are you going back to 6.5? I'm insanely curious.MeanOldDBAderrickleggett@hotmail.comWhen life gives you a lemon, fire the DBA.

I'm going to second Tara's advice on this one.Do a clean install. An upgraded server always seems to be less stable than a clean install. It's sorta like the Matrix. Every person that has faced an upgrade (an Agent) has died in the process :)Michael<Yoda>Use the Search page you must. Find the answer you will.</Yoda>

Well, company has two different applications, one uses 7, the other 6.5. It's an older application that may not be around much longer, but who knows, it could be...Anyway, the app that uses 7 is going away. and the other will be moved to the NT server before the upgrade.I don't make the decisions... I just do the work!

I've also heard that you can't install 6.5 on a 2000 server, which is why I'm doing it this way...Is that true?

No it isn't true. You can install SQL Server 6.5 on Windows 2000, you just need to immediately install sp5a in order for it to work. It'll warn you during the installation that it isn't supported, but it lets you get past it. Then install sp5a.Tara

It is for other reasons. It just isn't recommended that you upgrade from one OS to the next. It is recommended that you rebuild the box and install the new OS from scratch. I've never done the upgrade, so I can't give you any reasons why it isn't recommended. I knew that it wasn't recommended, so I never went down that route.Tara |
