Jason writes "We're having trouble deciding whether to run SQLServer2000 on box a or box b.

a) four 400mhz Xeons with 2.5 gigs of ram

b) two 1.4ghz Pentium IIIs with 1 gig of ram.

Which would you recommend we use as our production server?"

Depends ... <g>

How many databases?
How big?
How many transactions per hour?
How many concurrent users?
Is it all carefully hand optimised stored procedures, or crappy dynamic SQL?

Apart from that, given a choice, I'd have the RAM over the faster CPU
