I know that this might be a little on the side but I read somewhere in here that XP SP2 had some issues with SQL server. I'm considering the upgrade but I would like to know if anyone's tried it and if they could come up with some recomandations. I'm the only developer in my company and I'm really not prepared to have any issues right now...

I'd be interested to hear this as well. I'd also read somewhere that there are problems but I've yet to notice any side-effects both here and at work.

I did start looking around on the net for an answer but got side-tracked!

It might just be the fact that Windows Firewall won't let traffic through by default. All the tools seem to work fine for me.

I *think* the issue is that it will bar access to "personal SQL" running on XP workstations.

That's a gross oversimplification!, but Pucker SQL Server is not going to be running on XP (is it?) so remains uneffected.

Only today we found a client with a stack of PCs with MSDE installed [no SP3] collapsing under a Slammer attack. I have no idea if they need MSDE on each worksation, but.

Kristen, we rolled out a corporate policy. NOBODY is allowed to have ANY version of SQL Server or any database software without approval from the DBA group. If they install it, they get a nice little note from us and it magically disappears. The company saw the sense in this very quickly after things like Slammer. You might want to consider it. :) It's made our lives so much easier here.

Hell no. Much better to charge the client for the consultancy to fix the problem. Unfortunately, from a budgetary standpoint, they will still learn the lesson over time. (Perhaps I should have said "a client found us<g>")

Now if it was an internal issue ...

Well, whenever you need me to consult for a weekend or so, let me know. :) I'm itching for an opportunity to visit the UK. Actually, I wouldn't want to work. Any contract would need that part included.

You'd fit right in. All the people I employ do no work. Me included. The UK is like that (well, except where elwoos works ...)
