Carol writes "Hi
Problem is that SQL Agent autostart sometimes fails.

One of our SQL servers (SQL7SP3 NT4SP6a) has sqlAgent service set to autostart. When the server reboots, sqlAgent sometimes starts, sometimes not. Once the server is up and running, the SQLAgent service can be started with no problem.

It used to be fine - I think the problems started about the time the MS04 011 security update went on - but I can't find anything documented about this...

SQLagent.out says this:

02/08/04 03:03:21 - ? [129] SQLServerAgent starting under Windows NT service control
02/08/04 03:06:04 - ! [298] SQLServer Error: 232, Communication link failure [SQLSTATE 08S01]
02/08/04 03:06:04 - ! [298] SQLServer Error: 232, ConnectionWrite (WriteFile()). [SQLSTATE 01000]
02/08/04 03:06:04 - ! [000] Unable to connect to server; SQLServerAgent cannot start
02/08/04 03:06:05 - ? [098] SQLServerAgent terminated (normally)

any ideas?"

Are you having any other network errors? Is the Agent service running under a domain account?
