One of my servers has SQL2000 SP3 8.00.818 while another one has 8.00.760. What's the difference between these SP3s? I tried to download 8.00.818 from Microsoft site but it offers 8.00.760.09.

I have different SQL Server Editions in my environment: Standard, Enterprise and Personal Editions. Can I setup 8.00.818(SP3) on all of these editions? Where can I get 8.00.818 SP3?

Thanks,

818 is a security hotfix installed on top of SP3. So you really have a system with SP3 installed, and another with SP3 and an additional hotfix.

You can find the 818 hotfix in the download area for SQL Server at www.microsoft.com/sql

I downloaded SQL2000-KB815495-8.00.0818-ENU.exe but when I want to run it, I get the following error:

Error Executing the specified program:
C:\WINNT\TEMP\pft34.tmp\hotfix.exe

I tried to tun it on different machines but got same error. What's wrong?

When I run the Hotfix, I get this message:

C:\temp\hotfix.exe is not a valid Win32 application

Redownload the hotfix. It sounds like you have a corrupt file.

You are right Tara. Thank you! The file that I had was corrupted. I downloaded the patch and everything is fine now.

The version is 8.00.818. But latest available patch is 8.00.954. What is the latest recommended patch? Do you always update your SQL with new patches?

I don't know what you'd have to install to get to 954.

We always install the service packs and security patches after they have been tested. We do not blindly install these without knowing if they have any impact on our environment. We didn't install service pack 3 as we heard from MS about potential problems with that. We waited for service pack 3a as that had the corrections.

.954 is a hotfix that you can get from PSS if you ask for it. I personally would stay at the 818 patch level until SP4 becomes available, unless you have a problem that a later hotfix addresses.

Oh! I see. Thank you for recommendations and sharing your experience.

As you can see in http://www.sqlsecurity.com/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=37, there are many patches available. That's why I was confused to update or not. Actually, in my company, I have to have enough reasons to do it. At this time, we don't need to go further than 818 and probably wait for sp4 ;)

Is Microsoft the only patches provider? Or other companies and third parties do it as well? Who are PSS?
