| Morning peopleI have been asked to put forward a proposal for a database server, with regard to what RAID level to use and additional hardware requirements. It will be used to run MSSQL Server 2000 only. I don't really have any idea as to what constitutes as a good set up and would greatly appreciate your advice, as I would feel like a right plonker if my recommendations were wrong. We already have a PowerEdge 2650 box with the following spec:Processor 2.8GHz/512k, 533FSB cacheMemory (6 slots) 2GB EC DDR Memory (2x1GB)Hard drives (5 bays) 3 X 73GB SCSI Ultra320 (10,000rpm) 1in 80 pinRAID PERC 3/DI dual channel onboard RAID card with 128mb cache C04 MR5 RAID 5 using on-board controllerPower supply AC Non redundant power optionWe have another identical system, therefore, I am going to nick one of the hard drives from the other box so we shall have a total of 4. Here are my recommendations, see what you think:RAID 10 Additional 2GB memoryAnother processor????I selected RAID 10 as we want a highly fault tolerant system with good read/write ratio performance. However, it is all very well reading the theory about the various set ups, but I have no experience of administering such a system in practice. As I am sure you guys have, can you please advise me on what will suit our needs? Thanks in advance!!!Hearty head pats |
