Database Software: SQL Server 7.0 on NT 4.0 SP5

Could you direct me to a source that gives a balanced description of the SQL Server 7.0 backup (and restore) process? In particular I am interested to know how a database backup (*.BAK) differs from a file copy or "xcopy" of the *.mdf file.

Also, how does one "apply" the transaction log to bring an recent backup of the database to the point of the last transaction before media failure.

I have become the "de facto" database manager in a SQL 7.0 environment and have little experience with this product.

Thank you in advance for your generous assistance.

Tom"
