Hi all,
I need help! We have a server which has our datawarehouse with SQL 2000. It has several databases on it.

The size of the repository is about 40 G from which the warehouse is built/updated every week. the datawarehouse is about 90 gig.

We are running out of space on our server. We have to clean up a lot before our warehouse processing. After cleaning up everything, the free space on the server is 90 gig. I thought for the processing of the warehouse or any db for that matter, the free space available should be 2.5 times of the size of the db that gets processed.
Please let me know if this is true because I have to push management on buying more space. If there are any articles written on the db size vs disk space, pls help me find it.

Also, what would be the breaking point for my server? Would it crash if the free space on the server is less than the size of the warehouse?

Point to note is the repository is only 40 gig from which the warehouse is updated.

Thanks for your time.

jason

For performance reasons, you need about 20% free space on the volume. However, you have to consider your file growth settings for the databases. For instance, if the 90 GB file is set to grow 10% automatically, your next file expansion will eat up 9 GB of the free space. So, you have to measure the rate of expansion (how often this would occurr given growth patterns in a given amount of time) to finally estimate when you will run out of space or reach the 20% mark.
