Doug writes "I have two installation of SQL Server on different machines on my network.

I have used the Network utility to designate the port that I want the server to listen on

One of the machines reports that it is listening on the designated port in the log

The other machine only reports that it is listening on shared memory and named pipes.

What tools can I use to investigate the cause?"

Did you restart the MSSQLSERVER service after you made the port change? Do you have access to the registry to make this change, local admin access?
