I read comments in this forum that the Maintenance Plan wizard is not the best way to execute a maintenance plan. What are the cons of using the wizard other than less control?

from experience, errors are very difficult to troubleshoot, i end up recreating the entire package in the end (simply because, i can't understand which step was executed first, which to step over to and so on)

it depends on what type of maintenance you're planning to perform.

try exploring, jobs, alerts, data transformation services (DTS),

basically the plans are executed as jobs and scheduled to run at specified period(s)
