I run SQL Server 2000 developer edition on my Windows XP professional edition laptop. I didn't have any problems with the installation and this configuration is supported.

the workgroup, standard and enterprise editions of sql server can only be installed on server class operating systems.

the developer edition and personal edition of sql server can be installed on winxp. btw, personal edition ships with enterprise edition. But I would recommend you use the developer edition since it has all the features of enteprise ed.
